Arundel Castle, Misty November Afternoon
This site features the landscape photography of Chester Tugwell. Chester is based in England, West Sussex where he has spent many years enjoying close proximity to the South Downs National Park and to the South Coast of England.
Classic notions of the English countryside, so prevalent in Sussex, imbue his photography, as well as the changing moods of coast and landscape created by the ever fickle English weather. Beyond his home County, Chester’s photography explores some of the more dramatic landscapes of the British Isles including Cumbria’s Lake District and the Scottish Highlands.
Much of Chester’s landscape work involves the use of graduated neutral density filters which enables him to balance the light in a scene, primarily where the sky is a lot lighter than the land. He also takes advantage of shooting in RAW, an unprocessed version of the file that a digital camera produces.
With the ability to adapt exposure for different parts of a scene using a one or more RAW files, Chester attempts to produce images that are closer to the dynamic range of the human eye rather than restricted to the dynamic range of a camera. Whilst many purist might struggle with the idea of image manipulation, Chester believes that he is better able to capture the beauty and mood of the landscape by doing so.
